Nicky CAREY ART
Nicky Carey was born in Dublin Ireland. His art has visual musical qualities which embody the lilts and rhythms of his birth country. He moved to Reesville near Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in early 2017, where the landscape reminded him of his home country and has inspired in his new works a more colourfully whimsical approach.
Nicky is also a qualified Art Therapist and experienced workshop facilitator.
His works can be confronting and comforting. He pushes the boundaries of visual story telling. Extending the use of traditional techniques beyond their usual applications to breath new vision to the story and iconography.
He endeavours to retain his childhood vision of the world. But his works are not childish, infantile or immature. Within the art works are figures and events which are mainly derived from Freudian and Jungian psychology. They show a raw and unflinching view of the human psyche, encompassing both the humorous and darker sides of nature and happenings.
Nicky uses different mediums including print making (etching, lino and monotype printing), painting (water colour, acrylic or combinations of these), ceramics and poetry in his day to day art practice. Birds appear numerous times in Nicky’s works and they can be birds of freedom, death, voice messengers, or protectors. Cats also appear many times in his work. They relate to the mysterious, aloof and unknown. Other animals appear including dogs, fish and hybrids of all of the above. The human presence in the works are a celebration of the ongoing memories of childhood experiences, the day to day living, life & death and various other emotional states relating to human existence and behaviour.
The stories told in Nicky’s works can have many different meanings to the individual. He merely suggests a starting point for the viewer to relate their own story and meaning.
